Opening in various formats, Hampden Park has been part of Scottish sporting history since 1873 – with a second version of stadium being built in 1884 to make way for Cathcart District Railway. Hampden Park is it is located today was opened in 1903 on the third location of the venue and was the biggest stadium in the world from 1903 to 1950 – when it was surpassed by Maracana in Brazil.
Being such as core element of the Scottish and International sporting history the ground as held a number of world record attendances, including a game between England and Scotland in 1908 – which attracted 127,307 spectators and 147,365 spectators attending a cup final between Aberdeen and Celtic in 1937.
Official capacity of the ground was once at 183,000.
Over 20th century the ground evolved to meet modern standards, played a major role the World Cup 1966, has hosted numerous European finals, was a host venue in the 2012 Olympics and will be hosting a matches in the 2020 European Championships.
